The UAE Cabinet has approved the development of a ‘National Public Health Committee’ and the reformation of the ‘UAE Health Council.’

The UAE Cabinet, presided over by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai, has approved the formation of the “National Public Health Committee” and the reformation of the “UAE Health Council,” both of which are presided over by Abdul Rahman bin Mohammad bin Nasser Al Owais, Minister of Health and Prevention.

Under Federal Law No. (13) of 2020 on Public Health, the Cabinet authorised the organisation of the “National Public Health Committee.” The Minister of Health and Prevention will head the Committee, which will include a number of officials from the ministry and related agencies.

The responsibilities and functions of the Committee include examining public health policies, monitoring the execution of preventative and urgent response plans in the community, and coordinating the activities of each ministry, health authority, and other relevant authorities in the nation. Furthermore, the committee will be in charge of identifying priorities and proposing strategies to promote and improve public health research and studies.

The Ministry of Health and Prevention, the Presidential Court, the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, the National Emergency Crises and Disasters Management Authority, the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security, the Emirates Health Services, the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, the Dubai Health Authority, and the Sharjah Health Authority are all members of the National Public Health Committee.

The UAE Cabinet authorised the creation of the “UAE Health Council” for a three-year term, led by Abdul Rahman Al Owais and comprised of a variety of government and private sector organisations.

The council is in charge of researching the major challenges confronting the health sector at the federal, state, and municipal levels, as well as the private sector, as well as the laws governing this sector and health insurance programmes. The council’s primary responsibilities include coordinating efforts among federal, municipal, and commercial agencies and groups to enhance the quality of health services provided.

Furthermore, the Council is tasked with exchanging experiences, encouraging health and scientific studies and research, supporting programmes, activities, and services to achieve the objectives of public health policy, and shaping educational policy for studying health and medical sciences both within and outside the UAE, in collaboration with the UAE’s competent authorities.

According to the decision, in addition to its prior responsibilities, the UAE Health Council will be in charge of developing health policies and plans for combatting pandemics, as well as making necessary decisions in this regard in collaboration with the country’s relevant agencies.
